How does it work?

How long can I stay in Japan without a visa?

Citizens of the EU, the UK, the USA, Australia and many other countries may enter Japan visa-free for tourism, visiting friends or business meetings and stay up to 90 days per visit. Some nationalities get a shorter period, others need a visa. Check the list of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs before you travel.

How does the calculator count the 90 days?

Each visit starts on the day you enter Japan; that day counts as day 1. For example, entry on 10 January means departure by 9 April. Entry and exit days count as days in Japan. Stays that follow each other without a day outside Japan are treated as one visit. The date given by the immigration officer at entry is what counts.

Can I extend my stay beyond 90 days?

Citizens of Austria, Germany, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Switzerland and the UK can apply at a regional immigration office in Japan for a further 90 days, up to 6 months in total. For most other visitors, 90 days is the maximum, and leaving and re-entering straight away can be questioned.

What happens if I stay longer than allowed?

Staying longer than permitted is a violation of Japanese immigration law. It can lead to detention, deportation and a ban on re-entering Japan for several years. Plan your departure date in time.
