How does it work?

How long can I stay in the UAE without a visa?

Citizens of the EU and the Schengen countries and, since September 2024, also of the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada and Japan, among others, receive a free visa on arrival for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Citizens of some other countries get 30 days on arrival, others need to apply for a visa in advance.

How do the 90 days in 180 work?

There is no fixed half-year. For every day you look back 180 days and count all days in the UAE, including entry and exit days. If the total is more than 90, you are over the limit. Short trips add up, so frequent stopovers in Dubai count too; a transit without leaving the airport does not.

Do Dubai and Abu Dhabi count separately?

No. The rule applies to the whole country with all seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. All days in any emirate count together.

What happens if I overstay?

Overstaying leads to a fine for every day over the limit, payable on departure, and can cause problems with future entries. If you want to stay longer, apply in time for an extension or another visa through the official channels.
