How does it work?

How long can I stay in South Africa without a visa?

Citizens of most EU countries, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and many others are exempt from a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Citizens of some countries, for example Cyprus, Hungary and Poland, get 30 days, others need a visa. The officer stamps the permitted date in your passport at entry, and that date is what counts.

How does the calculator count the 90 days?

Each visit starts on the day you enter South Africa; that day counts as day 1. For example, entry on 10 January means departure by 9 April. Entry and exit days count as days in South Africa. Stays that follow each other without a day outside South Africa are treated as one visit. The date given by the immigration officer at entry is what counts.

Can I stay longer than 90 days?

You can apply to the Department of Home Affairs for an extension of your visitor's visa, well before your permitted stay ends. A short trip to a neighbouring country does not automatically give you another 90 days: officers can grant a shorter stay if they think you are living in South Africa.

What happens if I overstay?

If you overstay for up to 30 days, you can be declared "undesirable" and banned from entering South Africa for 12 months; for longer overstays the ban is five years. Plan your departure date in time.
